HIFIS Helmholtz Federated IT Services, Digital Services for Science =E2=80=94 Collaboration made easy.
June 2025

Dear HIFIS Community and Friends,

The combination of modern cloud services with the extensive Helmholtz data repositories, infrastructures and the digital workflows of the scientific communities that create digital research platforms puts Helmholtz in a leading position in international research.

The AWI with its repository Pangaea, which is also integrated into the Helmholtz Earth Data Hub, takes over data from US research. The Earth Data Hub is very successful so that new Helmholtz Data Hubs are currently being planned in other research fields.

This unique combination of cutting-edge research, leading data and computing infrastructures and service platforms such as HIFIS, HMC, Helmholtz Imaging, HIDA and Helmholtz AI, opens up excellent future prospects for Helmholtz and its partners.

UFZ RDM database rescue drawing

Back-up of Databases for Environmental Research

As you may have seen in the Helmholtz News, AWI and the University of Bremen are rescuing foundational US geophysical databases in PANGAEA. At UFZ, we are doing the same for toxicological databases, using HIFIS resources. Have you assessed the risks to the data on which your research relies?

September in Bremen: IT4Science and HIFIS All-Hands

You still have until tonight to submit an abstract to IT4science. This is a great opportunity to meet IT experts from the Max Planck Society, Leibniz, Fraunhofer and, of course, Helmholtz, and discuss common challenges and perspectives.

While planning your trip to Bremen, remember to register for our annual HIFIS all-hands, if not done already.

Let’s Talk About Education

After Bremen, Berlin. To prepare for the next TEACH conference (call for contributions is still open for a few days, until July, 4th), you can hear an impression of what happened at the last edition. Peter Schmidt, the host of Code for Thought was there and recorded an episode in which you can hear Fredo, Anna-Lisa and others.

Our New E-Learning Platform in the Making

One possible topic for TEACH could be the new e-learning platform that we are currently developing and testing. We are very excited about this project, which will enable us to provide high-quality online training and learning experiences for all Helmholtz.

It is based on Open edX, a powerful and -of course- open-source platform, which happens to be holding its annual conference this week in Paris.

HMC FAIR Friday with Prof. Paul Groth: “Distance and Data Reuse”

Join us for the next HMC FAIR Friday seminar on 11 July 2025 at 10:00 AM, where Prof. Paul Groth (University of Amsterdam) explores what makes research data truly reusable.

Drawing on empirical studies and his recent paper in the Harvard Data Science Review, he introduces the concept of “distance” between data creators and users as a practical lens for improving data reuse.
