HIFIS Helmholtz Federated IT Services, Digital Services for Science =E2=80=94 Collaboration made easy.
October 2025

Dear HIFIS Community and Friends,

Bremen was truly special, it’s good to meet in person once a year for our all-hands meeting. Many of you wished for even more time for exchange, we’ll make sure next year’s agenda leaves space for it. In the meantime we’ll remember the good mood, the purpose, life onboard a research ship and the incredible story of Alfred Wegener and Rasmus Villumsen.

What stood out most? That HIFIS isn’t just a service provider – we’re becoming a scientific partner. Not just by providing tools, but by meeting researchers where they are: in their workflows, their proposals, their questions – and embedding HIFIS into research workflows early. The strength we have across Helmholtz – a federation of centers that truly and trustfully work together – is something quite special that stood out again in Bremen. The unique setup of Helmholtz Information and Data Science (HIDS) offers valuable insights for broader initiatives like NFDI and EOSC, which have been weighing centralised and federated models for collaboration.

To bring this beneficial framework to new audiences – students, early-career researchers, and anyone curious about doing better science through trusted, open, and collaborative infrastructure – we’ll be hosting the Helmholtz Platforms Roadshow next month. Please help us spread the word to anyone potentially interested!

Upcoming Changes to Helmholtz ID

You’ve probably already heard about the upcoming changes for Helmholtz ID. These affect only people who have an account at a Helmholtz Center but no direct contract – typically students who are employed by their university instead.

External collaborators are not affected.
