Self-Declared AI Usage on HIFIS.net

AI Assistance: Light

If you read our tip on BLABLADOR, you may, like us in the HIFIS editorial team, be using Large Language Models to improve your writing. But do you always openly declare it? Would you even know how? We didn’t, until now.

Declaring AI Usage

Although it is quite easy for a reader to detect AI-generated content – these texts with a low perplexity that tend to all sound a bit similar (and too enthusiastic) – it is hard to detect AI assistance when the human is still the main creator. Automatic detection is also tricky, as it is often limited to a specific model, does not perform so well on mixed usage and is not as lightweight as we’d like.

As we believe readers deserve to know, we decided to add a self-declared AI usage when writing a page on hifis.net. This transparency is also recommended by the Helmholtz Guidelines on the Use of AI (german version).

From now on, you will see a badge popping up in the top-right corner of hifis.net pages, like this one here , stating how much AI was involved in creating what you are reading.

The Scale

The 4-level scale is defined as follows:

Badge Description Declaration
No AI tools used in writing or editing. ai-assistance: none
AI used for grammar and spelling only, using tools like DeepL Write. ai-assistance: light
AI used for rewriting, summarising or suggesting changes, using tools like BLABLADOR for brainstorming on specific parts of the human input. ai-assistance: moderate
AI wrote most of the content, which was generated by tools like BLABLADOR and only lightly edited by a human. ai-assistance: heavy

What You’d Need to Do

Whenever you are contributing to hifis.net, please fill in this new ai-assistance variable in the front-matter to declare how much AI helped you in the process. Here is an example with the front matter extracted from this particular blog post:

From now on and following current best practices, you can declare how much AI (if any) you used to write a contribution to hifis.net.

Thank you for being transparent!
